Ever felt ripped off?

A few times in my short career in design I have seen a few people copy what I have created. I do not dare to say that I am the best designer in the world or that I’m worthy of emulating, however I do take pride in what I create.

In the spring of this year, I was asked by my friend Justin Piercy to create a logo for his new company, Feedback Audio. I posted the logo to my flickr page on May 22nd. The logo, which can be seen at www.feedbackaudio.ca, features two lines next to the last “o,” representing audio. Those two green lines are a big part of his brand, and are carried out through the web design I am finishing for him now.

Today as I was browsing welovewp.com, I noticed a website called triloxigen.nl, which appears to be a designer in Holland. The logo he/she has created is simply Trebuchet MS, kerned tightly, with two semi-circular lines to the right. When I saw it, I almost couldn’t believe my eyes. Mostly because I don’t see at all how it ties into their brand.

Here are the two logos:

What do you think? Am I making too big of a deal?

Update:

As Maarten from Triloxigen writes “The waves are just derived from the RSS logo, or do you think the RSS logo is also a copy of yours?” As I wrote my post, I really hadn’t thought of the RSS feed icon. So, I am humbled and apologize for my comments.

The main reason I was upset was that I have been “ripped off” before, and not just in design. A few months ago on my previous blog, someone had not only copied my design, but was also stealing my content (which, was upsetting mostly because it was content of a personal nature, and while my content was written in English, the website that ripped me off was an Asian website, and just posted my content in English).

So, I do apologize to Maarten of Triloxigen.nl, and anyone else I may have offended. Again, it was only upsetting because this has happened before, and it hurt thinking it had happened again.

Looking for Theme Testers!

When I designed the theme for my blog, I made the decision that I also wanted to release a public version of the theme. I have never released a public WordPress theme, but felt I knew enough from designing several themes on my own, as well as developing a couple of full websites on the WordPress platform.

Well, I am proud to announce that I feel I have a test-ready version of my new theme, Junction. I would love to find 3-5 people who would be willing to test the theme out, and to provide feedback for me.

There are a few issues I know I’d like specific feedback about:

  1. I have attempted to “widgetize” my footer (as this theme doesn’t have a sidebar). I haven’t been able to test this yet.
  2. The overall look of the theme. Any additions or changes you’d like to see.
  3. Any mistakes or omissions I’ve made.
  4. Any features you’d like to see. There are a few things on my personal blog I haven’t figured out how to implement properly yet, but maybe together we can figure it out!
If you would like to be part of the testing process for this theme, please send an email to patdryburgh [at] gmail.com. I look forward to working with some of you!

Happy Canada Day - Canadian Design Inspiration

One of the beautiful things about Canada is that it is truly a diverse society. From the food we eat, the clothes we wear and the music we listen to, Canada passionately incorporates aspects of all our many backgrounds. No where is this more evident than in the designs we create. To celebrate Canada’s birthday, I thought I would share some design inspiration from North of 49

(Note: I’m posting this today because I will be at the cottage tomorrow! Happy 1 year, Sara and me!)

Happy Canada Day, everyone!

In The Details - Date Display Inspiration

Many times design is less about the grand, and more about the minute details. In this short series, I want to share some great design elements. These are the parts of design you aren’t supposed to notice, and yet many times they make the design. In part one of this series, we’ll be looking at date displays on blogs.

When the blog emerged as a social tool on the web, one of the highlights of the technology was the ability to update on a regular basis without the need to mess around with code. Because of this ability to regularly update, it was important to indicate when each update was made. On many blogs, this is done simply with a sentence in the form of “Published on xx/xx/xx,” or, “Posted by John Smith at 12:00am.”

In the following examples, the display of the post date is somehow creatively displayed. Rather than simply a sentence in the content, it is an enhancement to the overall design. In some cases, the date display is a work of art on its own.

ilovetypography.com

jasonsantamaria.com

lindseybreeden.net

I am sure there are many more great examples, but hopefully these will inspire you to take some time to think creatively and strategically about how something as simple as the date display on your blog entries is designed.

Easy Being Green - Green Design Inspiration

“It Ain’t Easy Being Green” - the heartsong of frogs and oil companies everywhere. However, there is another type of person who, if the following websites are any indication, don’t have the slightness trouble with the colour green.

According to Wikipedia, green can have contradictory meanings. In some cultures, it may symbolize hope or growth, while in others it may be associated with death, sickness, or the devil. Whatever the meaning, in a world where the word “green” is such a huge buzz word designers seem to be painting the theme in the mind of the consumer. Here are just a few green-themed designs that I’ve found lately.

Green Base

The following designs use green as the base colour. Most produce a clean, modern look, however there are a few that use it in a grungier manner.

DFC Engineering

anisignature

Profiweby

Design Snack

Bits and Pix

CompuBase

Eden

MacTarnahan\'s Beer

Green Highlights

The following designs use green as a highlight for logos, links, etc.

Audio Jungle

Hymotion

Evernote

Pure Structure

Pixel Zero

Crazy Egg

Project Vino

New Design Up!

This week I started putting together a new theme for my blog. As I posted earlier, the one I was using just wasn’t cuttin’ it. So, starting from scratch, I built this new theme. For now, I’m calling it “Munctional.”

There are a lot of things that I love about this theme, including the About section at the top, the layout of the footer, the position of the date stamp, and much more. I hope that these things aid the use of the site, and I’d love to hear your thoughts as to how everything works/does not work, and where you see potential for improvement. I’ll be posting about some of the cool features and details that I have incorporated in a little while.

There’s a few things I’m still unsure about, mostly the link colours in the main section, as well as the colours used in the footer. What I’m thinking about doing is doing a few colour schemes and giving you the ability to pick what scheme you like using a style switcher, but that will be a little while from now (as I’ve never used a style switcher before).

Until then, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the theme as it is now. I guess you could call this the beta version. At least, I will. It sounds so much more hipper that way.
